About this deal

A moisture meter is a device used to measure the levels of moisture present in a building. They are often used to measure moisture levels in walls. Moisture meters can either work as conductivity meters or as capacitance meters. Generally speaking, moisture meters that are calibrated for wood offer a reading scale ranging from 6% to 40%. Does it mean that wood can not hold more moisture than 40%? No. As said earlier, wood has a great water-holding capacity and can have way more than 40% moisture content. Freshly cut wood, for example, can hold between 40% to 200% of damp in it. Quite impressive isn’t it?

With the use of its pins, it offers a measuring range of 5-50% for wood surfaces and 1.5-33% for building materials. With the pinless sensor, the range for both types of surfaces increases to 0-99.9%. It is powered by a single battery that comes with the product. Pros Most of these still work by conduction of electricity. However, that’s naturally-occurring electricity in the soil. The tips of the probe will have at least two forms of conductive metal. If water is present, any natural electrical current in the soil will be transmitted to the probe. Bryan explains how the meters work and shows you some moisture ‘profiling’, which is where moisture meters really shine. This means that they can be used as a very useful tool for any surveyor, who may be trying to gain an insight into the causes of dampness. These meters can be a liability if used incorrectly, so it is essential that surveyors understand the limitations of them. That way they remain a positive tool, rather than a misleading one. It’s surprising how many surveyors don’t know how to use a moisture meter properly. This applies to residential surveyors and even specialist damp surveyors too. Bryan has made it a priority to help train users to make good decisions based on meter reading, rather than bad ones. You should be aware that a moisture reading of 0-15% is quite normal and gives no cause for concern. However, moisture readings in excess of 15% indicate the need for further inspection. Levels between 25-30% indicate that there may be water ingress, meaning that remedial work could be required. It’s also worth bearing in mind that environmental conditions will have an impact on the moisture readings, with higher levels of moisture expected on wet days. Moisture Meters for Soil Your meter may provide you with precise, quantitative results but without a chart to reference, you may not know what the numbers it's showing actually means. Wood and lumber should have moisture levels of 6% to 8% for internal materials while external wood and lumber should have levels of 9% to 14%.

Moisture Detection/Measurement

Does not provide as wide a range of measurements as compared to some of the other products on this list.

Di-Log DL7108 Digital Humidity Meter - Screwfix

Whether it's a ficus, succulent, pothos, dracaena, you won't have to guess whether or not it's time for your houseplants—you can use it for outdoor potted plants as well—to get a drink with this accurate soil moisture meter from XLUX. Simply push the 7-inch probe a few inches down into your plant's soil, avoiding roots and stems, and within seconds, the needle will stabilize on a moisture reading. The face of the meter is large and it's very easy to read the moisture scale, which ranges from a dry 1 to an overly wet 10. Within that range, the dry zone of 1 through 3 is colored red, the optimal moisture zone of 4 through 7 is green, and the wet zone of 8 through 10 is blue, so you can tell at a glance whether your plant needs water. This product is another pinless moisture meter. It has a great measuring range and an intelligent shut-off feature. Other benefits include its high levels of accuracy. This product is ideal for measuring delicate surfaces since it is pinless. It is small and relatively lightweight. Early detection of moisture or water damage is essential. Meters help in the prevention of mould growth and structural damage, both are costly to repair and can be detrimental to health and safety.Repeat this process several times by measuring different areas of the same surface. Find the average reading from all of the measurements undertaken.

Portable soil moisture meters are purpose-made to identify levels of moisture within soil, compost, and vegetation. Such meters are commonly used by gardeners, farmers, and conservation experts to ensure that environmental conditions are ideal for growing plants, flowers and crops. It is advisable to take readings in a few different areas around the vegetation to ensure accuracy across the board. You can also use this sort of meter to assess the type of soil (whether moist or freely draining) and calibrate irrigation systems. Moisture Meters for Plants There are generally two types of moisture meter for crops to choose from. Some models enable non-crushed grains to be measured, while other designs are suitable for measuring grain which first has to be crushed and pressed. A sample is taken and measured. The value determined in this way gives you the measurement result. Calibrated moisture meters are generally found in agriculture and trade. To adjust the reference values accordingly, the moisture meter for hay and straw or cereals can be corrected or adjusted to a constant value. Many devices used to measure the moisture levels in cereals also have an option for measuring the temperature. High-quality moisture meters for cereals are distinguished by this: If for example we have a wall with some damp stains. They could be patchy and ill-defined. In the video Bryan mentions ‘profiling’ the wall so that we get a better idea of the distribution of the moisture in it. This is great because in general the higher readings will be nearer the source of the moisture and the lesser readings well, further away. This is basic but very useful as an aid. Visual evidence is important, but the meter may sometimes show that the source of moisture doesn’t follow the stain pattern – very useful. Profiling is done to obtain the distribution and then compare that to what the surveyor sees; the type of construction; location; topography and other factors. A diagnosis can then be reached and will normally be accurate if, the surveyor has used his skill, judgement and equipment correctly. He should know how to use a moisture meter properly.Moisture meters (otherwise known as moisture detectors) are used to measure the amount of water within a material sample. This measurement allows the user to find out whether the moisture levels are appropriate, or if adjustments need to be made.

This pin-type moisture meter is one of the most popular out there. It comes in an ergonomic size. This meter is a high-quality moisture meter for wood, and it is good for testing moisture in any uneven surfaces. In terms of design features, it’s a pin-type meter that weighs 227g and its dimensions are 14.1 x 24.1 x 3.6 cm. Not necessarily. A moisture meter can be used to help detect problem areas, but it cannot detect mold. The hope is that you would use the moisture meter to detect a leak before the mold can form. But if the moisture is left untreated, it can become the perfect environment for mold spores to flourish. Q. How do you use a moisture meter on drywall? Our step by step approach to using a moisture meter is broken down based on type but these exact steps may need to vary depending on the device in question and which material is being tested. We will discuss these types of moisture meters in more detail in the next section. Using a Pin Moisture Meter This product offers a measuring range of 5% to 30% whether for a drywall or wooden surface. It’s powered a 9-volt battery that comes with the product. ProsIf you dry your own wood, a moisture meter that can take a reading of freshly cut wood will allow you to estimate when it might be ready to burn. In these cases, a larger moisture range will give you more information. Look for moisture meters range that from 5 to 40%. And if the loud beeps start to get on your nerves and you’d rather look at the LCD display for your moisture readings, you can turn off the noise. The Lignomat Mini-Ligno E/D moisture meter is a premium tool designed for a specialized purpose. This pin moisture meter comes calibrated for use with wood and wood products, but it boasts an accuracy of 0.5 percent on a precision scale of 6 percent to 45 percent. Its sturdy body is easy to hold and use, with sharp pins that can push through even the toughest wood. Wood naturally has a high moisture content, once dried by air or a kiln, meters are used to detect moisture content ensuring the material is dry enough to work with. Some moisture meters are more accurate than others. I recommend looking for a meter with at least an accuracy of around 1% each way.
