About this deal

The early stuff, John pencilling "Marvel Team-Up" and "Two-In-One" is very good for the form, if a little bit generic. He inks his own pencils here, and he suits his own work – there’s a realistic edge that marks his FF from what had gone before. Personajes icónicos, villanos totemicos e historias de buena complejidad que mantienen un grado de interés bueno y adictivo; de lo mejor de Stan Lee. Sometimes, this revisionism is not for the best – with the author making suspect observations to validate past plot points. Byrne tells a lot of fascinating stories here, but they’re all anchored in the original comic books.

With the passing of the decades, and with the wild swings in Byrne's work and attitude during that time, the critical standing of these comics has faded. Plus: The FF aid the Inhumans, bid farewell to the Baxter Building, don new costumes and celebrate their 20th anniversary in style as Byrne reminds us all there's a family at the heart of this team of adventurers! For a comic book fan, it doesn't get much better in terms of art or imagination than this overstuffed volume of modern day Fantastic Four classics. I like the idea that Reed is so scientific to classify Galactus as beyond mere good or evil, but I have a bit of difficulty in how he seems able to use that to get away from the rather real harm that Galactus does. sees the disparate super-squads in conflict due to the Mad Thinker and Puppet Master’s malign machinations, but the inclusion of Chic Stone – Kirby’s most simpatico and expressive inker – elevates the illustration to indescribable levels of beauty. then reexamines in an extended re-interpretation that first meeting from the premiere issue of the wallcrawler’s own comic. They are a bit thinner in terms of drama than I remember but with the size of the comics of the time Byrne did a great job in a limited format.

Pencilled this time by Kirby, the dramatic duel benefitted from Ditko’s inking which created a truly novel look. This summation of the admittedly mediocre plot cannot do justice to the engrossing wonder of that breakthrough issue – we really have no awareness today of how different in tone, how shocking it all was. After an almost literal lifetime of writing and editing, Lee entered new entertainment fields and earned Marvel one opportunity after another. And, given that the Skrulls are the race we see suffering from Reed’s decision to help Galactus, it’s an interesting point to make – if the Thing doesn’t feel too bad about brutalising them “too much” by virtue of their breed, will the Fantastic Four care too much about the death of their home planet? By your actions was I first delivered to Galactus,” he insists, explaining why he has targeted Earth, “by your actions shall I be freed! However, Reed seems like a massive hypocrite throughout these pages – some of it is undoubtedly an attempt to add complexity to the character by giving him a particularly rational and dispassionate mindset, but I’m not sure that Byrne recognises some of the more worrying characteristics he brought out in Reed.

I think the reason his run is so well received is that he modernized a lot of old Fantastic Four concepts, making them easier to read and better stories in general. Sadly, issue 200 is written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by Jack Kirby, so it is not included in John Byrne omnibus. Whereas Byrne, of course, resolved the matter in the course of a few pages, and with nary a tweet fired off in faux righteous indignation. Death describes the two of them as primal forces within the cosmos, “the shepherds who guide it to its proper purpose.

As the X-Men emerged as Marvel’s cornerstone franchise, the Fantastic Four were still looking to find a footing.

well its the King (Jack Kirby) but compared to today's over used splash pages and awkward character poses some may find the art a bit bland. Lower corners a little bumped with slight edge-rub and small top rear corner tear to DJ only, bright and unmarked. My favorite storyline in the book was very different from the others, as it had Doctor Doom regaining the leadership of Latveria from Zorba, who had turned into a mad dictator since Fantastic Four helped him to become the new leader of Latveria in Fantastic Four issue 200.And like the Fantastic Four, they continually strove to overcome the impossible and achieve the extraordinary. Superstar John Byrne’s legendary run concludes with one of the most innovative periods in FANTASTIC FOUR history! He churned out mystery, monster, romance and western material in a market he suspected to be ultimately doomed, but as always he did the best job possible and that genre fare is now considered some of the best of its kind ever seen.
