DR: Before the call we got talking a little bit about George R.R. Martin, and you had mentioned that he was an influence on you. So I was just curious about the story there. How did you discover George’s books?

The Blinding Knife is a wonderful work of high fantasy with engaging characters facing the perfect antagonists, set in a creatively-wrought and increasingly chaotic world brimful of imaginative magic and interesting politics. Weeks holds fast to the traditions of his genre while adding a compelling new flavor." Our servers are getting hit pretty hard right now. To continue shopping, enter the characters as they are shown And then when I read the second book I was like this is even better! This is how you should do it. Because as a reader I had felt so betrayed by trilogies that…that the first book comes out the gate and you’re like this is amazing…and then second book sort of nothing happens, and in the third book the finale is interesting but you’re like man, that was like one and a half books that I got out of there. And I was like, no sophomore slump for George! Look at this, this is amazing.BW: The reason I wanted to shift narrative styles in this one was partly to give this series its own identity. But another huge part is, as a writer I’m always looking for new narrative challenges. I’m trying to grow my skills, and I’m trying to do different things. I know I could probably make a really great living doing books just like the Night Angeltrilogy yearly, and just put out the same thing, change the names a little bit, change who Kylar’s killing this week. I could spin that out for a long time and have a very lucrative career, but that’s just not the kind of personality I have. If I do that, boredom is death for my art. So I always need to be doing new things, I always want to be stretching myself and trying things that are hard and scary for me.

The Night Angel Trilogy: 10th Anniversary Edition Night Angel: The Complete Trilogy (omnibus) Perfect Shadow: A Night Angel Novella It’s your bookworm friend’s/parent’s/coworker’s/cousin’s/ roommate’s/sibling’s/spouse’s/neighbor’s/partner’s birthday BW: I was an early discoverer of George’s, not of his earlier work but of A Song of Ice and Fire. I think I read it in ’97? I didn’t get the hardcover version because…I was a a poor high school student, I didn’t have any money. But I saw the cover, it looked really different. I read the book and I was like oh my gosh, this is fantastic. This is really different and this writer is really good, like he’s really in control of his skills. And I liked how he was doing something that seemed really new. So I love that he kind of took the genre and he just ran his own way with it. He was like, yeah, I’m doing my own thing and your’e gonna have these super long chapters, which I thought were brilliant. When I was a young writer, I actually studied [his work and writing techniques].Brent Weeks has a style and immediacy of detail that pulls the reader relentlessly into his story' Robin Hobb But Kylar’s best – and maybe only – friend, the High King Logan Gyre, needs him. To protect a fragile peace, Logan’s new kingdom, and the king’s twin sons, he needs Kylar to secure a powerful magical artifact that was unearthed during the war.

With rumors that a ka’kari may be found, adversaries both old and new are on the hunt. And if Kylar has learned anything, it’s that ancient magics are better left in the hands of those he can trust. In a small-town Montana school at age twelve, Brent Weeks met the two great loves of his life. Edgar Allan Poe introduced him to the power of literature to transcend time and death and loneliness. Fate introduced him to The Girl, Kristi Barnes. He began to pursue each immediately. The novel was a failure. The Girl shot him down. Since then—skipping the boring parts— Brent has written eight bestselling novels with The Night Angel Trilogy and the Lightbringer series, won several industry awards, and sold a few million books. Brent and his wife, Kristi, live in Oregon with their two daughters. (Yeah, he married The Girl.) You’re rereading the original Night Angel Trilogy while you wait for NIGHT ANGEL NEMESIS, scheduled to be released on April 25, and you’re just so freakin’ excited to return to Midcyru with Kylar and revisit some friends and foes, both old and new… Weeks has been showing other fantasy authors how it's done for over fifteen years."—Peter V. Brett, author of The Desert PrinceThis week marked the release of Night Angel Nemesis, the long-awaited follow-up to the Night Angeltrilogy by Brent Weeks. Weeks has been publishing fantasy novels for nearly a decade and a half. With two beloved series under his belt — Night Angeland Lightbringer— he’s flexed quite a few different creative muscles over the years. But none of the author’s previous works are quite like Night Angel Nemesis, a bold new take on his breakout series which feels like a grand return and a fresh beginning all at once. In fact, I’d go so far as to say new readers might even have an advantage here. One of the most notable aspects of Night Angel Nemesisis that, stylistically, it is an enormous departure from the original Night Angeltrilogy. Those books were dark, brooding medieval fantasies that recalled George R.R. Martin or Joe Abercrombie, told in limited third person with a variety of viewpoint characters. Nemesis, on the other hand, is split between only two characters, with the vast majority of the book being told as a recorded first person account by assassin Kylar Stern about a fateful heist that goes wildly out of control. But some jobs are too hard for an easy conscience, and some enemies are so powerful the only answer lies in the shadows. In a small-town Montana school at age 12, Brent Weeks met the two great loves of his life. Edgar Allan Poe introduced him to speculative fiction and the power of literature to transcend time and death and loneliness. Fate introduced him to The Girl, Kristi Barnes. He began his pursuit of each immediately. If he does the job right, he won't need to kill at all. This isn't an assassination - it's a heist.
