About this deal

By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. I've been solving the puzzles from it daily for the past few weeks, it is really helpful to improve your tactical vision. I have used this book on several occasions to prepare for USCF tournaments, usually after a playing layoff. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations is the companion volume to Reinfeld's 1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate. I just wanted to ask for anyone who has both of these books also, does it seem like the tactics book is signifigantly harder than the checkmate book?Web icon An illustration of a computer application window Wayback Machine Texts icon An illustration of an open book. Reinfeld's solutions do usually represent the best continuation, and its important not to settle for the exchange, when you could have won a rook! If you have an e-book such as Kindle, you might want to look into "Tactics Time" by Tim Brennan and Anthea Carson, which I wrote about in another thread.

Test Your Tactical Ability" by Neishtadt is somewhat more difficult than Reinfeld, and also excellent if you can find a copy. The positions and solutions are available on the web, but I find even this poorly produced book more convenient to use than a computer screen. I go through these books about every 4 - 6 months, scoring myself as to solutions and, thereby, measuring my progress and focussing on my weaknesses. Thanks for the replies Jollepa, and hey man just keep practicing and your visualization will improve before you know it. Working through the puzzles in this book will add 100 points to your Elo rating if you are under 2000.I see nothing conclusive so I finally turn to the back and lo and behold he gives Bxf7 as the winning move with the line Rxf7, not even bothering with Nxf7. Start going through Reinfeld or a similar intermediate tactic book (as someone would normally do, with calculation, etc. Most difficult are the examples that run seven moves and more; some of these may even stump an ordinary master.

I've actually done most of the Reinfeld book but in terms of actually being able to resolve the problems quickly again, I can probably only get 75% of the ones I've done. A lot of them don't have one solution, but several, and a lot of them should definitely not have been in such a collecton at all.Any beginner who wants to improve their chess and take it to the next level should go through the book and solve the puzzles in this book thousands of times and defeating you at chess will not be easy for average chess players. The book clearly has its faults, particularly the current reproduction, but I did not find any of these faults to be important. I still think it's very good though - part of the issue may be that I play almost entirely blitz when I play, so there's just not enough time to do the deeper calculation that I do when I'm solving Reinfeld problems. Strong club players should be able to solve most of the exercises from the diagram at first attempt. Thereby, adding to your knowledge, to make you a strong chessplayer, and finally, to delight you with some of the most beautiful moves ever played.
