About this deal

He is well known for his hugely successful football fiction for Puffin, and is one of Barrington Stoke's top-selling authors, writing about both sport and history with great appeal. I thoroughly enjoyed the diary entries, as they were different from a typical soldier's view of the war and there was a lot of action described in the diary, compared to Lily's life. I really liked how him talking about the war wasn’t just a story, it was a diary entry and his personal feelings. In fact, all the way through there is much to develop empathy in the reader, making this a great book to share and discuss with children.

When going back through the book and my notes for Armistice Runner I was struck by how subtly multifaceted it is. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. There are lots of books set in the first world war, but this one is unusual because it links it very much with the present, and you learn far more about the logistics of war and how the war was ended, then you do about the actual fighting.

Tom Palmer was a reluctant reader as a child and credits articles about football with getting him into reading. But she reconnects with her Gran when she finds her great great grandfather's diaries who also was a runner. More First World War Literacy Resources to accompany Over the Line , Wings: Flyboy and Armistice Runner (Posters, videos, playscripts and quizzes) downloadable from here. It is a good introduction to WWI, and it is relatable for teenagers as the family story and having an ancestor who fought in the war runs through many British children's families.

The character I found most interesting was Lily because she was resilient even though the times when her gran was in her weakest and toughest times. Lily reads his diaries and through them discovers a hidden family history which helps her connect with her grandmother. She was a good role model to her younger brother as she never let him see her worried or disorientated.Information for Grown-Ups: This book has a super-readable layout and typeface so that even more readers can enjoy it. The whole book was set on running and world war and this was shown in different ways throughout the book: some scenes were when they the Germans and English were fighting and some was when the firing was happening and other parts were when the soldiers were being helped from being shot. This story will pull on your heartstrings, but it also makes the history and experiences of soldiers during WWI more accessible, understandable, and easily digestible for teenagers. Armistice Runner’ is a moving and inspirational story fromTom Palmer, who is something of a master when it comes to sport-themed writing.

I disliked Lilly’s younger brother Tim because he was extremely rude to Lilly when she raced and insulted her. The book, then tells the reader, of her great great grandfathers experiences of the war as a runner whilst telling us about Lily’s experiences of reading the diary. I really enjoyed reading this book because it demonstrates what happened at that time very clearly and it shows the journey of an inspirational Runner with strength. As with all of Tom’s books published by Barrington Stoke, these books are ‘super-readable’ due to their accessible layout including a dyslexia-friendly font and tinted paper. They are interesting in the fact that they all have the same hobbies and personalities, as a result of this they all express their feelings in the same type of way.Towards the end of the book, Lily takes part in a race and came first place, this made her very content. The sto y was a bit of a lot of things, it was a bit of sad, exciting, and a page turner, the ending was really happy because ernise that was in the First World War, and lily , the other main character ,apart form ernise, Lily is a fell runner and is practicing for a long run.
