However, Van Reybrouck and other authors on Congo, such as Adam Hochschild ( King Leopold's Ghost) and Michela Wrong ( In the Footsteps of Mr Kurtz), receive worldwide accolades for a reason: they make Congo's history "readable" for us, the outsiders. If you want to read about how fiddly it was to rig up a satellite camera link in 1979 or how big and fast people in 1979 thought computers would become in the 1980s then this is the book for you.

The expedition encounters a handful of problems such as flying through an anti-aircraft attack mounted by the Zaire army, parachuting into the jungle (everyone lands just fine), rafting down some river into the remote East (they are attacked by angry hippopotami), and trekking across the unstable crust of recently active volcanoes (the Virunga range of volcanoes, as described in an extended factual digression which names the main ones as being Mukenko, Mubuti, Kanagarawi, p.Knopf, USA, 1980, hardcover, 1st trade edition, very good+ book, very good cover, not remaindered, book club or library, mylar cover, unclipped jacket, unmarked, appears unread.
